Cannaregio is one of Venice's most authentic districts: quiet canals, crowd-free alleys, and bacari where locals stop for a glass of wine. From Cà Letizia, near the Madonna dell'Orto church, you can reach the whole city on foot or by vaporetto. Here's how to make the most of it.
🚶 Getting around
There are no cars in Venice: you move around on foot and by vaporetto (the ACTV water buses). The Orto stop is 5 minutes from the apartment and very handy: it's the first stop coming from Marco Polo airport and has a direct connection to Murano. The San Marcuola stop on the Grand Canal is also 5 minutes away.
Tip: if you're staying several days, consider a time-based ACTV pass (24/48/72 hours), better value than single tickets. For the airport, the Alilaguna stops at Fondamente Nove, nearby.
🗺️ The neighbourhood, right by the apartment
- Madonna dell'Orto church — a Gothic gem, the "Tintoretto church", where the painter is buried.
- Strada Nuova — Cannaregio's main street, with shops and markets, leading towards Rialto and San Marco.
- Jewish Ghetto — the oldest in Europe, with its synagogues and unique history.
- Sacca della Misericordia and Fondamente Nove — open views over the lagoon towards the islands.
⛪ The great landmarks
From Strada Nuova you can walk to the Rialto Bridge and St Mark's Square (20–30 minutes), with the Basilica and the Doge's Palace. Along the way you cross the heart of Venice; alternatively, the vaporetto along the Grand Canal is one of the world's most beautiful journeys by water. Santa Lucia station and Piazzale Roma are 15–20 minutes on foot.
🏝️ The lagoon islands
From the nearby Orto stop (or Fondamente Nove) you can set off for the islands:
- Murano — the island of blown glass and its furnaces.
- Burano — the colourful houses and the lacemaking tradition.
- Torcello — the oldest and quietest, with the basilica of Santa Maria Assunta.

A walking itinerary designed starting from Cannaregio, to enjoy Venice at a slow pace and away from the crowds.
Day 1 · The heart of Venice
Set off from the apartment along Strada Nuova: in about twenty minutes, past shops and glimpses of the Grand Canal, you reach the Rialto Bridge and its market. Continue to St Mark's Square, with the Basilica, the Bell Tower and the Doge's Palace. In the afternoon get lost among the calli — the Libreria Acqua Alta is worth a stop — and finish with a stretch of the Grand Canal by vaporetto. In the evening, cicchetti in a bacaro near Rialto or in Cannaregio.
Day 2 · The lagoon islands
A day among the islands, very easy from home: from the Orto stop the vaporetto runs directly to Murano and its blown glass. Continue to Burano, with its colourful houses and lace, and end in the quiet of Torcello and its ancient basilica. Head back in the late afternoon and have dinner among the bacari of the Fondamenta della Misericordia, a short walk from Cà Letizia.
Day 3 · Art and authentic quarters
Spend the morning in Dorsoduro: the Gallerie dell'Accademia, the Peggy Guggenheim Collection and the Salute basilica, with a stroll along the Zattere. In the afternoon explore Castello, the largest and most lived-in district: via Garibaldi, the Giardini and the Arsenale — the Venice of the Venetians. Close the day with a lagoon sunset from the Fondamente Nove.
Have a few more days? Add the Lido and its beach, or San Giorgio Maggiore for the view from the bell tower.
🚆 A day trip beyond Venice: Verona
From Venice, Verona is just over an hour away by train: the perfect day trip for the Arena, Juliet's House and the Valpolicella wines. If you'd like to stay overnight, we happily recommend Opera in Love Verona, a welcoming tourist apartment in the same authentic spirit.
🍷 Eating like a Venetian
In the evening, the experience not to miss is the bacaro crawl: small taverns where you have an ombra (a glass of wine) with cicchetti, the Venetian tapas. Cannaregio, especially along the Fondamenta della Misericordia, is one of the best places for it. Nearby you'll also find excellent fish restaurants and supermarkets for groceries.
ℹ️ Practical tips
- Tourist tax: €4 per person per night for the first 5 nights (exempt ages 0–9; 50% reduction ages 10–15; full rate from 16).
- Access fee: active only on certain days/periods set by the City, for day visitors. As our guest you don't pay it: we send you a QR code to register on the City's website and get the exemption.
- Comfortable shoes: you walk a lot, across bridges and alleys.
- High water (acqua alta): rare and forecast in advance; if it happens, follow the raised walkways.
