Supermarkets in Venice: where to shop in the centre

Published 31 October 2026 · 4 min read

One of the advantages of staying in an apartment in Venice is being able to shop and cook: you save money and live the city like a resident. But where are the supermarkets in the historic centre? No hypermarkets or big car parks, of course — only neighbourhood, calle-sized stores. Here's how to find your way, with a special eye on Cannaregio.

🛒 The chains in the historic centre

In the city of Venice, supermarkets come in small or "express" formats, spread across the various sestieri. The names you'll see most often:

  • Coop and Conad — the most widespread, with a full range for everyday shopping.
  • Despar / Interspar — including the famous Despar Teatro Italia on Strada Nuova, a supermarket set inside a frescoed former theatre: worth a look even just to see it.
  • Prix — a budget chain, with several branches in the city.
  • Crai and Alì — smaller names and neighbourhood shops for the essentials.

📍 In Cannaregio, near Cà Letizia

Our neighbourhood is very handy for shopping. Along the Strada Nuova and Rio Terà San Leonardo — a few minutes from the apartment — you'll find several supermarkets (Coop, Despar, Prix) and open-air fruit and vegetable stalls. In practice you have everything on your doorstep: bread, water, breakfast, and you buy fresh fish at the nearby Rialto market. After booking we point you to the handiest spots for your needs.

🕑 Opening hours and practical tips

  • Hours: generally open from 8–8:30 to 20–21; many also open on Sunday (sometimes with reduced hours). Smaller shops may close midday or on Sunday.
  • Small stores: space is limited, so the range is essential — for a big shop, plan a couple of stops.
  • Bring a bag: bags are charged and you walk a lot; a foldable shopper is ideal.
  • Water: buy bottles at the supermarket, but remember the water from public fountains is good and free.

🐟 Supermarket or market?

The local tip: use the supermarket for the basics (breakfast, water, pantry) and the market for fresh food. Just steps from Cannaregio is the Rialto market, with the Erberia (fruit and vegetables) and the Pescheria (the freshest fish in the city, in the morning). That's where a dinner cooked in your apartment becomes memorable.
