Where to park in Venice

The first thing to know is the most important: cars cannot enter Venice. The historic centre is made of alleys, bridges and canals, so you drive only as far as the edge of the city, leave the car in a car park and continue on foot or by vaporetto. Here are the three places to park, from the closest to the cheapest, and how to reach Cannaregio.

🅿️ Piazzale Roma (closest to the city)

Piazzale Roma is the only point where the car actually enters Venice: it's the end of the Ponte della Libertà bridge, where the road stops and the city on the water begins. Here you'll find two garages: the Autorimessa Comunale (public, AVM) and Garage San Marco (private).

It's the most convenient choice but also the most expensive, and the most in demand: in high season it's best to book online in advance. From Piazzale Roma you reach Cannaregio on foot in about 15–20 minutes, or by vaporetto along the Grand Canal.

🚗 Tronchetto (large and a little cheaper)

Tronchetto is the artificial car-park island next to Piazzale Roma: a huge multi-storey car park (Venezia Tronchetto Parking), often cheaper than Piazzale Roma and with more spaces. From here you reach Piazzale Roma in a few minutes on the People Mover (the small automated tram, separate ticket) or by vaporetto. Great if Piazzale Roma is full or you want a middle ground between convenience and price.

🚆 Mestre and the mainland (the cheapest)

If you want to save money — especially for stays of several days — the best choice is to leave the car in Mestre, on the mainland, and take the train: in about 10 minutes you arrive at Venezia Santa Lucia station, right at the start of Cannaregio. There are car parks near Mestre station and park-and-ride sites linked by bus and tram. It's the smartest option for value, and it leaves you perfectly placed for our neighbourhood.

💡 Practical tips

• Book online in high season and at weekends: the Piazzale Roma garages fill up.
• Don't try to "drive into" Venice: beyond Piazzale Roma there are no roads, only water.
• Mind the restricted-traffic zone on the Ponte della Libertà during peak periods: access is sometimes regulated.
• Unload light: with luggage and bridges, the less you carry the better.

• Want maximum convenience: Piazzale Roma, then vaporetto or a 15–20 min walk to Cannaregio.
• Looking for a good compromise: Tronchetto + People Mover.
• Want to spend less (several days): Mestre + train to Santa Lucia, right by us.
